Select The Right Tofu For Your Tofu Recipes
Great tasting tofu recipes all lie in choosing and using the right tofu. Tofu recipes are widely popular in Asian cultures since tofu originated in China. However, a lot of people all over the world are eating tofu due to the health benefits it brings. Even vegetarians use tofu as mock meat.
Tofu is made from the curd of cooked soybeans. Usually before pressing it into smooth blocks, a coagulating agent is used. Tofu also undergoes the process of pasteurization, same as cheese. Due to its bland taste, tofu is a very versatile dish. Furthermore, tofu has a high nutritional content.
The Chinese even called it “meat without bones” because it is highly rich in protein, iron, and calcium. Tofu is low in bad cholesterol and sodium. It is even known to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and the occurrence of certain cancers.
In selecting the right tofu, you have to know that there are two “families” of tofu with three different textures. You have silken or Japanese tofu and regular or also called Chinese tofu. Silken tofu is commonly used in desserts, soups, and sauces due to its creamy texture. For stir fry dishes, regular tofu is used due to it capability to retain and hold its shape.
You can pick from soft, firm and extra firm tofu textures. If you are planning to mash your tofu, you can use the soft one. Compared to silken tofu, soft tofu is much firmer. You also use it as a replacement for scrambled eggs. Soft tofu can also be used in smoothies and drinks.
For grilled and stir-fry dishes, it is best to use firm and extra firm tofu textures because it does not break easily. To make your tofu harder, press the water out of it. If you are planning to marinate your tofu, pressing it would enhance the absorption of flavors. As compared to soft tofu, it has a more solid texture making it a good meat substitute.
To avoid a bad tasting tofu, it is really important to use the right tofu for your tofu recipes.
